Fly Drive Tasmania Holidays

Searching for some great ideas on Fly Drive Tasmania Holidays? We have tips and advice for flying into and driving around Tasmania.
Whether you are flying in from anywhere in Australia, or from overseas, our island of Tasmania is an ideal destination for a fly drive holiday.

Thinking of a Fly Drive Tasmania Holiday?

There are two ways of travelling to Tasmania. One way is to sail over onboard the Spirit of Tasmania ferry service with your own car and do a Self Drive Tasmania Holiday. By far the quickest way though is to choose Fly Drive Tasmania Holidays. Fly into this island state, hire a car, and drive yourself to each destination.

Flights in Tasmania arrive at the two major airports are Launceston in the north, and Hobart in the south. For short holidays, say around 6 nights, you can easily fly into one airport(eg. Hobart Airport) and fly out of the other airport(eg. Launceston Airport). This is an ideal way to see either the East Coast or West Coast of Tasmania. For a more extensive fly drive holiday we advise to arrive and depart from the one airport – this enables you to travel around the island, visit all the major sights, and minimise driving times by reducing back tracking along the same roads. This requires at least 9 nights to appreciate the wonderful destinations along this circular touring route.

Twelve to Fifteen nights is our recommendation to fully appreciate the majority of Tasmania’s unique offerings.

Planning a Fly Drive Tasmania Holiday?

Flying:

Which airport should I fly into – Hobart or Launceston? Short answer is either airport is perfectly fine. Both have excellent facilities. Both are small airports so arrivals, departures, and car hire pickups are a breeze. Launceston Airport is in the north of the state so travel times are usually shorter from most Australian airports. This can, but not always, make for slightly cheaper flights. Hobart has the most number of direct flights to other Australian airports so this can be an important factor when selecting the arrival and departure airport.

Hire Car:

All major Tasmania hire car companies have pick up and drop off desks at both Launceston and Hobart Airports. So it makes sense to start and finish your fly drive holiday at one of these two locations. Having said that, it is also perfectly fine to have your last night any other location in Tasmania(with the exception of Strahan) as most locations are within 2.5hrs driving from either airport. In fact there it takes around 2.5hrs to drive from Launceston Airport to Hobart Airport. Driving from Strahan takes around 4hrs to Hobart or Launceston Airports and is not recommended if you are on a tight schedule to catch a departure flight.
